Woman, you can WRITE! I finished reading your wonderful book last night. You and Jorge had such a romantic, loving and heartbreaking relationship. I understand now why your memories are so clear and treasured. The book is researched and
written so well. I loved the way it all comes together, first with your narration, then with Jorge's letters. You must feel such satisfaction now that you've revealed your inspirational story and shared your great capacity for life and love. Congratulations, dear friend!

Thank you so much Violeta Barrett for letting me be privy to such a magnificent personal love story. Its influence stayed with me for days and haunts me still, weeks later! What an honor it must have been (maybe it still is) to have had such an exciting relationship which I'm sure helped to develop the person you are today. I stayed up till 2:00 a.m. to finish it. Just couldn't put it down. Thanks again for sharing your memoir from the heart.

I loved reading your book. What a fabulous accomplishment. You write so well. I could visualize all the places you were visiting and feel the passion that was pulling you and Jorge together. Reading it was even more enjoyable because I know the author personally.

This review is for First Love Just Once in a Lifetime: A Memoir
I started reading First Love the moment I got on the plane and finished it before landing in Houston. You lucky girl to have had a true love. I felt so warm inside after reading your book and those letters were/are every young girl's fantasy. I just loved it and have told all my friends to get a copy. I'm not lending mine to anyone. I'm so proud to have you as a dear friend.

Now I know what you mean by the "gift" of having been loved in such a magnificent manner. The letters are truly beautiful and so touching. You can actually feel the longing. These are sentiments that most of today's generation would not know how to put into words. Jorge was a beautiful writer (as are you), and his adoration of and devotion to you are palpable. You are truly fortunate to have known a love like that and I am so glad that I was able to experience it through your wonderful book.

From the first page, the book had me!! I have always loved a good love story, but since I happen to know the author personally, the book took on an interesting perspective. I sat down and read it in a matter of hours. The magnetic force that jumped off of the pages made me realize this was indeed a REAL love story. You think you know someone until they put a pen to page regarding chapters from their past. "FIRST LOVE Just Once in a Lifetime: A Memoir," reflected a part of the author I did not know or even imagine. I knew she had an extraordinary ability to write, but I was more than pleasantly surprised to see how well the story was told, and I knew how dIfficult it must have been to reflect on this tender love story. Life is full of choices.....they both made theirs and now we know why.

I have already passed on to family and friends what a "good read" the book is. It is the story of love that many of us have had or wish we could have had. Terrific!!!

This book is as lovely as the person who wrote it. The love letters.... ooh how I wish I could have received just ONE of the many Violeta received.. and was smart enough to have kept them this long.

If you believe in LOVE or have been in LOVE... this book is a MUST to read and enjoy the charming words from someone's heart to another person's heart. Would have been nice to know what Violeta's love letters said...and if they were also kept by Jorge. I hope that written LOVE letters stay in existence.

We who have had a similar life experience can thank the author for being strong enough and willing enough to open her heart and share the most precious and private, joyous yet painfully sad moments of her life. I was totally consumed by it. It was beautifully written.

Even if you have not had this experience, it will touch your heart. If you have had this experience, it will captivate your imagination so that you feel you are not reading her words but seeing your story as though you had written it yourself.

If I were told I could only keep two books for the rest of my life, one would be the Bible......this book would be the other!

Well, this book isn't about the shallow, pretty faces on American reality shows. This book is about the real, once in a lifetime, spiritual and physical joining of two human beings. The feelings author Violeta Barrett sparks in her autobiography of a Mexican love affair will touch your heart. No vibrancy is lost as she relates her story of meeting Jorge on a trip to Mexico, long ago. Her vibrant writing takes you there to share the intensity of a deep first love, the time when humans open up fearlessly and fully.

The beautifully graphic book contains the passionate love letters sent to her from Jorge. That this man was married at the time, seems not to attract judgment as we have all been there and made our own moral decisions about what is "right" and what is "wrong". A must-read for those of us who cherish real romance.

This year my husband and I are celebrating fifty years of marriage. First Love:Just Once in a Lifetime: A Memoir, was the perfect book for both of us to read. My husband (a romantic guy), was able to relate to the intense love story. Of course, as a sensitive women, I also found the love story compelling. I also particularly enjoyed the setting in Mexico and I now yearn to visit all of the areas where the romance took place. First Love was an exciting book for both of us to read and to discuss in our fiftieth year.

Having known Violeta for a number of years while I was in business, I did not know her well enough to realize that she had such a wonderful writing talent. My reading is at least a book a week and her writing talent rates with the best. A true love story that is both sad and happy capturing the reader's interest from the first few pages. If you are anything close to a romantic this is a book you will have trouble putting down.

By Neil - See all my reviews
Violeta Barrett has crafted an intriguing and honest tale of love between a man and a woman. Intriguing because it is a beautifully told story of first love but not by a very young woman just starting to experience romantic life. This story is the finding of first love even after a first marriage. It is refreshing in this now crass and politically correct world. Ms. Barrett has excellent command of descriptives and she captures her feelings and the essence of the Mexican setting with skill. I would like to read more of her most interesting life, perhaps New York and Wall Street in the forties and fifties. There seems to be a lot to mine there.

This book was so heartwarming. First, the cover design was lovely and simply invited you to open the book. As a woman, this book made me sense the warmth of an affair between two people who met in a beautiful country and fell in love. The author writes so beautifully and expounds on her love for this man. Her descriptions are so well defined that it makes you feel as though you are sitting near them as they embrace and share their love for each other. The actual letters are a real bonus to this book and show how much Jorge tried to share his feelings to her, an American, in a far away location. Every woman (and man) who has ever been in love should read this book.

By Rosemarie Hurley - See all my reviews
Life serves up many curves to us, most times when we least expect it. Violeta's book and true story, is a perfect example. I am sure there are very few people who can say that they have never been "love struck" at first sight. When this happens to you, you have no control of it. And there is nothing wrong with it. It is not planned--it just happens and it is so special. How lucky to have experienced such a love.

The beauty of this book is just that. It happened to a beautiful young woman and a handsome gentleman and it instantly blossomed into a deep, true love. What a wonderful, captivating story. And of course, since it is written from the heart, it takes you in from the first page! This book is so well written and rings of truth, so much so, you cannot put it down. The photographs make the characters come alive and the beautiful love notes would melt anyone's heart.

This is a book that I read almost all at one time. It is so interesting and riveting, and so cleverly written that you are drawn in from the start. It is a book that you must read to appreciate, and, I promise you will, like me, be sad to finish it ...left longing for more. This book is movie material. Fantastic !!

Reading your book, I sensed sad and great moments during this relationship. Jorge, a handsome man in his beautiful country of Mexico, and you a beautiful, intelligent and worldly woman, it was easy to see why the two of you meshed so beautifully. How fortunate that you saved all his letters in which he revealed his passion for you even though you were apart. You are lucky to have lived and have been truly loved......"just once in a lifetime."

Everyone hopes to meet the love of their life and we get to read all about one lucky woman who does so in this memoir. I could not put the book down wanting to read more of this special love between two adults. As a world traveler, I too have met a man with whom a relationship emerged. We too communicated from a distance for a while so I was very interested in Ms. Barrett's love affair. Reading the many love letters she received and so smartly saved all these years was a window into a special relationship which many people never have. This is a very unique story told mainly through love letters which were full of passion, love and respect for a very lucky woman.

It was simply a stunning book and so eloquently written, which I expected, as Violeta is a special friend. Her written word is so compelling that I was transported to that place she described so perfectly, even Eden-like! And oh, the love pouring from her writing and Jorge's was overflowing and uplifting. What a gift to be able to write like that. She should be so proud. I feel so privileged to call her my friend.

Little did I know when I met the author for the first time fifty years ago in Mexico, where we were both vacationing, that some day I would be reading about that trip in her book. At the time, I had no idea that she and Jorge were involved in a "once in a lifetime" love affair. This book, not only reflects a passion that took place years ago, but also her deep abiding passion for life, adventure and the true meaning of love. Violeta expresses this eloquently in her book, as well as remembering the many fascinating places in Mexico. She is a romantic at heart and you cannot help but feel this conveyed in the book. Yet when it came to reality, a decision had to be made. It's a story that some can relate to, but find it difficult to put into words.

5.0 out of 5 stars First Love - A memoir about forbidden love, November 28, 2011
By Janet, Florida
Absolutely mesmerizing! Violeta Barrett transports the reader to some of the most romantic destinations in Mexico as she opens up her heart and shares her and her lover's most intimate thoughts. "First Love" is also a forbidden love, spanning thousands of miles, making the reader anxious to turn to the next page wondering what the future may hold for both of them. How difficult it must have been to decide to share this story after so many years of keeping it a secret - difficult but truly courageous.

This is such a sweet story of a long, enduring love. Not only did the author perfectly describe those feelings between the lovers, but she also captured the love of a beautiful country and culture. 5.0 out of 5 stars Just Once in a Lifetime December 9, 2011

FIRST LOVE vividly descibes the peaceful, charming beauty of a Mexico some 50 years past. The reader can sense the love between these two from different cultures and geographic locations. This is a love not meant to be. Jorge's passionate verses live on today in the author's memories that we are allowed to experience. True love never dies; it endures through all time.

Violeta's book is the story of movie quality and I hope that the future will bring us. Wonderful! This book should be discussed in Book Club reviews.

5.0 out of 5 stars New Memoir Validates Unforgotten Star-Crossed Love August 1, 2012
The Hispanic Reader
One of the better pieces of advice given to writers is to write what you know. Violeta Barrett does just that in her compelling memoir, FIRST LOVE, published in English and Spanish. The Spanish title is PRIMER AMOR. Inspired by a dream that literally transported her back in time, Violeta wrote her true love story about a forbidden love, kept secret for fifty years.

Kirkus Reviews, the world's toughest book critic, writes: "The book tells a story of endless love that comes but "solamente una vez en la vida," and leaves the reader wanting more. A memoir that has the courage to believe in eternal love, despite the pain. - August 3, 2011

Barrett also received an enviable review from Kirkus for her recently published Spanish Version. (See Spanish Edition).

Thoroughly enjoyed this curious cat [story] which reminded me of how close we become to our precious animal friends, especially a cat. Violeta let us travel with her on her relocation adventure enjoying the little surprises traveling with our pets.  I would recommend this book to older children and a must for adults who find themselves on such a journey as Violeta. I give this adorable read a five star rating and am delighted with the beautiful illustrations.

5 out of 5 stars This is a wonderful book, March 22, 2014

After reading her previous book on her experience about love, I just had to read this one. I can't tell you how wonderful her books have touched me. She has told two of the most deeply felt stories that parallel MY life without ever having met me. That is astonishing! I just lost my own cat not long ago to so I can relate to Violeta's experience with her "Angel". It's pretty neat how she puts into words the emotions you can feel when confronted by a pair of loving eyes. Thanks for writing!!

I purchased this book at an event and I absolutely cracked up when she said she put her cat on a leash. I have been a cat person all my life and it rang so personal, to let the reader understand her lack of knowledge of a cat. I would have loved to have met her cat.

For Christmas, my friend gave me a copy of your wonderful book. My husband and I truly enjoyed it. It so closely resembles our story. I wanted to share with you that we also have an "angel." Ours is still with us and his name is Benjamin. Prior to Benjamin, we had lost our beloved cat, Gilbert, and were devastated. Our neighbors knew we loved cats and one day a neighbor knocked on our door and asked if we would take in a cat that had been begging at people's doors. We took one look, and as they say, "the rest is history." I swear that Gilbert sent him to care for US.

Hope to meet you someday.

i enjoyed this story of how to overcome the sadness of troubled days. It's a heartwarming adventure that brought me back to what is most important: my relationships with family and friends--which includes the bundle of purring fur who always waits for my arrival. Every cat lover will enjoy this book and nod along as the author gently tells the story of one good cat who takes care of the human. I laughed, smiled and had moist eyes--and then I gave my cat the best seat in the house: my lap.

5 out of 5 stars A DIVINE BONDING, October 21, 2013

By G.Claeson

As the author, Violeta Barrett, expresses on the back cover, ANGEL IN DISGUISE truly embodies what she set out to write about...a relationship with an animal that, for whatever divine reason, bonded the two for the time they had with each other. She made it an interesting story [for people of all ages] with a moral, that we should embrace those who come into our lives, learn from them, appreciate them, love them and keep their memories in our heart. She [the author] should be proud of this work.
